Kolos & Veyn: What's the difference?

They both translate to 'where' so I was wondering what on Nirn (hehe) is the difference between Veyn and Kolos? I see that 'veyn' is non-canon and 'kolos' is canon so I assume one'd generally use the latter but I'm still confused... Enlighten me!

Good observation! Kolos means "where" in the sense of "in which". For example, "This is the tomb where Ysgramor is buried" would use kolos; "This is the tomb in which Ysgramor is buried."

On the other hand, a question like "Where is Ysgramor buried?" would need to use veyn. You could just as easily rephrase this to use kolos; "In which tomb is Ysgramor buried?"

I see. Is it not better to phrase a question to use kolos so that it's closer to the canon?

It would be, yes. I'm trying to think of a situation where this wouldn't be possible. It also requires extra words. "Where is the king?" compared to "In which place is the king?" We could potentially say that this extra word isn't necessary and context is enough. "In which is the king?", kolos jun? Then we could delete "Veyn" entirely.

Suppose this:

"stand where I can see you" --> "kriist kolos zu'u vis koraav hi"

Would this be "Stand in which place I can see you"? That doesn't sound right. Maybe, in this context, kolos would mean 'in what place' or 'in a place'.

A better way to think of "kriist kolos zu'u vis koraav hi" if we wanted to use kolos in this way might be "Stand (in a place) in which I can see you." Does this sound more correct, or do you think a separate word in veyn is still needed?

No that works actually but it would make kolos a difficult word to learn. Worth the difficulty though, I think.

Banished to Oblivion.

An important thing to keep in mind is that if you wanted to say "Where is ...", you'd simply say "kolos ... " and not "kolos los ... " since kolos is already a compound of ko and los.

In mind well kept. You should definitely write of that in the word notes.

Oh, one more thing: Would it be possible for, in the search function of thuum.org, canon level of a word to be displayed just beside the word type? It would make coming up with new words SOOO much easier ^-^
