The genitive and double genitive

I stumbled upon this site a couple of days ago, and was immediatly overcome by a sense of wonder and joy. I went on to read your grammar book, and in section discussing the genitive, there was an example of an unpreffered construction of a double genitive, more specifically "my father's" , where the genitive morpheme -ro was stacked upon the possessive morpheme -i (my) as -i-ro. My question, then, is two-fold. 1.) Is the genitive marker -ro/-dro a case marker or a phrase clitic, and 2.)Where are the possessive morphemes -i, -i/-o, -ii, etc. applied, before or after other modifying suffixes?

Great question!

  1. "-ro/-dro" is a clitic.  It functions exactly like English's -'s.
  2. Possessive suffixes would normally be applied last after all other suffixes, but in that specific example it's used before.  It's the difference between "Bormahidro" and "Bormahrol".  Generally though, you would really want to avoid using those two on the same word, so it would be best to separate it into "dii bormahro" ("my father's") or "___ do bormahi" ("___of my father").
