Tol vs Fod

I don't know if this has been addresed before, but it appears to me that tol is used to state when a thing happens, and fod is used to ask, "when does a thing happen?" Any thoughts?

Do you mean rul vs. fodTol means "that."

It's a good question. Not much is known, but a note in Prima Games' online list suggests that rul is only used at the beginning of sentences or clauses. Fod would be used in the middle. Compare:

  • Ahrk fin norok paal graan fod nust hon zindro zaan "and the fiercest foes rout when they hear triumph's shout"
  • Ahrk fin zul, rok drey kod, nau tol morokei frod, rul lot Taazokaan motaad voth kein! "And the voice, he did wield, on that glorious field, when great Tamriel shuddered with war!"

Following this, your observation is correct. Rul oblaan grah? "When did the battle end?" Grah oblaan fod Tullius kriin Ulfrik "The battle ended when Tullius slew Ulfric."
