Types of poetry in Dovahzul

 1

So one idea I had was taken from the first stanza of the main theme (treating it like a poem) which is:

Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin
Naal ok zin los vahriin
Wah dein vokul mahfaeraak ahst vaal
Ahrk fin norok paal graan
Fod nust hon zindro zaan
Dovahkiin, fah hin kogaan mu draal

Since the dragon language has a heavy focus on syllables this type of poem (that I still need a name for) follows this patern:

3, 3 (must be seperated by a pause)

6

6

6

3, 6 (same as above)

This is simmiler to a haiku, at least in principle. Are there any other specific types of poetry that fit well into the language?

Expanding on that style of poetry, the rhyme scheme is AABCCB.

I'm not really sure if a rhyme scheme is neccecary for poetry in dovahzul. certen languages dont focus as much on rhyme as in english, yet it could be interesting

I think it's interesting to note that the number of syllables (or at least note changes) in each line is a multiple of three, and that the time signature of the song is in 3/4. The number three is incredibly important in dovah culture. Shouts have three words of power, dragon names have three words and three syllables (yes, there are exceptions, but there are VERY few and they annoy me so I'm ignoring them), etc.  I'm pretty sure that Bethesda didn't do this intentionally because the Elder Scrolls theme was written long before they had any sort conception of the dragon language, but it's still cool.

Considering this, I bet that if the dov wrote poetry, it would have something to do with the number three.

True which is why all lines are multiples of three.

I made a quick poem earlier, before I found this thread & was intrigued by the 3/6 rule you proposed. It'd be interesting to think that they have different rules for different kinds of poem. Example, 3/6/6/3 for poems of a prophetic type or legendart figures (like the one below).

Gon wah oblaan,
Faal Lot Naakin fent kos, Nau
ahney oblaan Rok praal,
Wah du lein.

Fah Rok los
Alduin, Diistkiin do un Bormah,
Dez wah oblaan nii pah, Voth
Ok graal, Pas viing.

Dez wah kos

fent piraan, Sovngard ahk
Rok fent unt, Nuz nunon
faal Lok Rok

fent rel, Fah
dez vorohah Mok ni Jun,
Nuz nunon Daan-Qolaas,
Alduin Diistkiin

It's a simple example, directly translated from english to dovah - but it does roll really well when you divide it into groups of 3 spoken syllables. I find it to sound almost regal.

That is epic, and that was my point. Shakespeare's sonet format (4 quatrians and a couplet) could be easly used in a "epic" poem. In the same way this could be a stile for a epic poem in Dovahzul. Maybe a "fanfiction" of the first dragonborn, titled "Dovahkiin" simmilar to Beowulf

A fictional epic poem relating the creation of the first Dragonborn & his fate to stop Alduin proper, now that would be quite an undertaking... I could try, but it should be reviewed after every 10 orso paragraphs by others. Raruth, I don't know xD

When misrule takes its place at the eight corners of the world
When the Brass Tower walks and Time is reshaped
When the thrice-blessed fail and the Red Tower trembles
When the Dragonborn Ruler loses his throne, and the White Tower falls
When the Snow Tower lies sundered, kingless, bleeding
The World-Eater wakes, and the Wheel turns upon the Last Dragonborn.

I don't know what you find of this translation, but it's as good as I can do in limited time. trying to keep the 3/6/3 or 3/6/6/3 rule in is a lot more difficult than I thought. Here I used 3/6/3, but I'm going to see what I can do with 3/6/6/3 & if it perhaps has a better flow.
