Just use the Legacy Translator, that is what it is after all. I use it because I felt the same way you did until I found it.

The reason it doesn't work the same way is a long discussion, but the quick explanation is that there are much fewer words available, and it's intended to encourage learning rather than something you just copy and paste from.

If someone gets access to the private key, they can use that to decrypt our passwords, which would not be good!

This is a good video explaining exactly this. I don't know how difficult it would be to implement hashing and salting, but it seems to be the best solution.
