I am very new to dovahzul, and writing can be tough when trying to find words in English that also exist in Dovahzul. Do you have any advice on how to create new words in dovahzul? ?

Grohiikviing I am very new to dovahzul, and writing can be tough when trying to find words in English that also exist in Dovahzul. Do you have any advice on how to create new words in dovahzul? ?

Hey Grohiikviing, this would be better asked on the Question Board or in the forums, but I'll try to give you a helpful answer here.

The first thing you'll want to do is look for close synonyms. Let's say you're looking for a word for "struggle." Instead of making a new word, you could use krif 'fight' or kein 'war' instead. If there isn't a close synonym, see if you can rephrase the sentence in a way that could use an existing word. For example, if I wanted to say "I love slaying dragons," I could say Zu'u frin wah kriin dovah 'I'm eager to slay dragons' or Dovah-kriin los smoliini 'Dragon-slaying is my passion' so I don't need an exact word for "love".

Lastly, if you have to make a word, try to make a close compound from existing words. A "pup" might be a mal-dok 'small-hound', or a "bird" might be a lok-raan 'sky-animal'. The prefix vo- 'un-' is also a helpful tool. It can turn any word into an opposite. There's no word for "slander" or "insult," but you could say vowerid ?'to un-praise'.
