Word Wall Contest

February 1, 2018

Our first contest of 2018 will return to the tried and true Word Wall! In Skyrim, a Word Wall is an inscription in the Dragon Language that tells a short story or commemorates a hero or event. For this contest, write a Word Wall that might appear somewhere in the land of Skyrim.

Winning entries will be featured in a collection here in the Library. You don’t need to be a member to enter, but if you are there’s also a  120 gold prize for the winning entries.

Here's an example of what a contest entry might :

Het pr1n balgr5f
jun do 4rolsedov4
wo sp1n ok jun1r
nuz nis v3k f1l
kod1v se brom

Het praan Balgruuf,
Jun do Ahrolsedovah,
wo spaan ok junaar
nuz nis viik faal
Kodaav se Brom

Here rests Balgruuf,
King of Whiterun,
who shielded his kingdom
but could not defeat the
Bear of the North.

Contest Entry Guidelines

Entries should be roughly between 10-30 words in length, or approximately 3-5 lines. Word Walls tend to be brief and like to rely on context clues for full meaning. See the Word Walls lesson for more on grammatical patterns in Word Walls.

Entries must relate to Skyrim in some way. You can be as serious or silly as you'd like. The winning entries will be those that make the best use of the language and its vocabulary.

All contest entries must use the vocabulary found in the main dictionary. Entries that make use of vocabulary found in the Legacy Dictionary will not qualify for the contest. You are encouraged to make compound words and use the vocabulary as creatively as you see fit.

You can submit multiple entries, but only one entry will be considered for the contest.

You can send your entry in a private message to paarthurnax or send it in the body of an email to [email protected] with the subject line: Word Wall Contest – your name.  In this message/email, please provide:

  • Your contest entry (don't worry about runes)
  • A translation of your entry
  • The name, pen name, username, or blog url you would like to be listed as the author of your entry

This contest will be open for entries until Friday, February 23rd.  Pruzah pel!

Zu'u koraav. So, the Legacy Dictionary isn't allowed. This should provide a newfound challenge, and probably a unique spin on this contest. I look forward to seeing the winning entries, and I'm hoping one will be mine.

Would it be more proper to use possesive pronouns, such as [ok] or [dii], or to use possesive suffixes, like -ii or -u ? Just wondering for the sake of authenticity :)

Great question! Word Walls actually tend to avoid possessive suffixes, so those might be considered more conversational.

You bet, anything relating to Solstheim is fair game, too.

Happy to help! The lesson pages will help introduce you to the alphabet and grammar. Here's one about reading the runes. The runes can be challenging, so I'd learn words without them first. The Memrise course can help you pick up some basic vocabulary.

In the just fall game, you will face off against other players directly. Each game will see you partnered with a different player by random drawing. To create a team of eight, you can, nonetheless, also extend an invitation to additional players to join you. To be the last penguin standing on the ice is the battle's straightforward objective. In this jumping competition, your aim is to outperform every other participant and secure the top position.
