Hello to all Dovahzul Speakers!

There was an idea put forward to create a group or community of gamers capable of playing their games entirely in their selected "Mythic Level language". From general polling, it was determined that Dragon speak was among the top three most desired.

To that end, I have compiled a list of just over 200 words that cover many different gaming terms, from card games to board games and numerous others.

A request to the Community - Help me finish translating the list! If a direct translation is not available, a reasonable synonym can be used. I just request that if a synonym is used please include the logic for it.

(As translations are made I will be updating the list and crediting people who helped flesh it out.)

Sounds like a cool project! For the sake of longevity, you'll want to stick to canon as closely as possible. The good news is most the combat-related words will have direct or close to direct translations. For more technical terms, you'll really have to get creative and stretch some words.

"pick up" - ofaal 'receive' could work, or daal 'return'
"remove from play" - govey nol lein 'remove from the world'
"run out" - evenaar 'extinguish'
ability - suleyk 'power'
after - mindin 'after'
all - pah 'all'
attack - nos 'to strike'
bad - vokul 'evil', bein 'foul', vopruzah (lit. 'un-good')

become - meyz 'to become'
before - us 'before'
block - spaan 'shield / to shield'
break - kren 'to break'

copy - fiik 'mirror'
counter - vo 'undo'
creature - sivaas 'beast'
creature - sunvaar 'beast' (a monstrous beast)

Paarthurnax, you are just awesome. I seriously did not expect that kind of response! (Let alone that fast!) Thank you so much!

id love to hear more about the project, how it works, where it occurs how i can join in etc =)

At the moment it is a standalone, however a website to pull gamers together for this is already being put together. The future site is hoped to be "www.GamingLinguistics.com". We are probably going to use a free site hosting service like webs.com until we get some real steam going behind us.

As for how it works, the idea is to have players learn the language through gameplay. A lot of language learning is done through  association, repetition, variation and interpersonal dynamics. So by combining those factors into gameplay where all those are met at once, like say for example in a trading card game, the player(s) can learn simple things at first and grow into the language in a fun and competitive fashion.

This circles back to why I made the list above; it allows gamers to have access to the widest range possible for terms they might need to use.

According to what I am seeing, the non canon words are going to be overhauled soon. I am thinking for now we use the canon -> modern words available to fill in the gaps, but after the overhaul we update the list with more appropriate translations - but like Paarthunax suggested, keep as close to canon when possible.

deck - lahvu 'army' ('gathered/mustered many') is the closest I can think of

I thought maybe "book" would be a good translation. Lessee, perhaps "dey"?

@Kendovahrol  That is a fascinating way to translate "game". I like it! How did you arrive at the translation for it though? Did it just come to you or did you have to contemplate it?

it took some contemplation. the idea of a game is always chance are a long series of actions, to me a series of actions is a quest or adventure. so if there is a word for quest that could also work i guess
